KnotMan by philho KnotMan by philho
I wanted to do a drawing to use as avatar on various fora and sites (and IM).

I wanted to do something a bit "virtuosic" to show my know-how (could be better...), with symbolic meaning (with a vague reminicence of Da Vinci's man in a circle, and the use of the number 5 which I like: 5 tips in the head, 2x5 fingers, 5 limbs), and using the idea of celtic knots, which I love.

I drawn it on ruled paper, taking care of symmetry... Which I didn't used as is, anyway, but at least it gave me an idea of the final rendering, and it allowed me to take care of central transitions.
I drew, working on interlaces to make them interesting. It wasn't obvious, even more on the hands. I also took care of spacing the lines, to take in account strong downscaling and to balance the blacks and whites.

Then, by transparency, I cleaned it with a black felt pen, drawing only the right part with small overshots on the central part. Then, I scanned it, patiently touching up irregularities (still some work to do) almost pixel by pixel (on a master picture of 1500x1500 pixels!), and I use mirroring to complete it with perfect symmetry.

Then I erased the going above/under with white lines, reducing their width in the hands to preserve lines too close.

I want to vectorize it, to ease the process of smothing it furthermore.

-----

I saw this in your icon and just HAD to find it. XD

Very well made! I love Celtic Knotwork myself, but seldom draw it, because #1, my short attention span will likely abandon it in the very near future, and #2, making sure to get the pattern right is really hard for me.
You're work is impressive, because it's so detailed (What with the five points you mentioned in your comments, and even the flow of muscles through the little man), and you even managed to get every line to go over-under-over-under. I can't ever seem to get that rythm right, (I usually skip one, so it goes over-over-under) which is why my drawings aren't really celtic knotwork. I'm impressed with your ability to design this. XD

Yes, I even have their first disk. They met quite a success with this one, but since then, one member left (they are two now) and even as they released recently another disk, it went quite unnoticed...
